How to support a loved one on a weight loss journey?

1. Join in on eating healthier with them this will be good for you too.

2. Tell your spouse or loved one that they can do this and tell them the changes you see in them and encourage fitness.

3. Help hold them accountable at home even if they get mad. Husband’s and wives have a hard time with this because we like to enable them and let them have what they want when we are actually hurting them and not helping them this often happens to avoid a fight. Remember this is an area that they are struggling in and deep inside they want to change and need your support.

4. Listen to them. Your spouse or loved one may have had a stressful day with work or with kids that can drive them to wanting to eat other things and crave more sweets.

5. Remind them that this is going to take some time and if they keep working at it things will keep improving.

6. When eating out pick healthier restaurants with them and when shopping choose healthier food options and less junk food.

7. Ask how their day was? Ask them to tell you more about their day what was so good about it or what was stressful.

8.Recognize how hard this transition is for them.

Here are some examples of active listening techniques…

1. I understand how hard this is and how stressful this can be. If it were easy nobody would be overweight or unhappy with the way they look and feel.

2. I know how hard you are working towards your goals and I know your going to accomplish them.

3. So what I hear you saying is you are having a stressful and frustrated day and that makes it harder to be consistent with your fitness plan.

Bad examples of active listening can include saying the following…

1. I don’t know why this is so hard for you just quit with the snacking already.

2. If it’s too hard just quit and give up.

3. What is this rabbit food I’ll just eat pizza with the kids.

4. What’s causing you to eat so bad just don’t do it.
